ENGLISH VERSION
“Out of Place_an ongoing archive” is a curatorial project aimed to collect a range of materials, mainly quotations, publications and images related to the concept of contemporary nomadism. The purpose of “Out of Place” is to create a temporary archive collecting a wide overview of theoretical references and ideas about nomadism and its effects on the forms of contemporary art production. At the core of our research there is the idea that being out of place is a condition that allows a subject to continuously relocate himself or herself somewhere. This process leads to a movement not only physical, but also temporal, necessary to construct the constantly changing meaning of our presence in a place. Although in the last years the increasing mobility and artistic migration have helped to highlight the effects that an itinerant life can have on the concept of site and on the artistic practice itself, we are still often linked to the idea that the identity of a person, and especially an of artist, is closely linked to a place of belonging and that a place can be our own, because we are somehow fundamentally linked. As Miwon Kwon has highlighted in 2002, this kind of relation with right places is usually considered useful to reaffirm our sense of self, reflecting back a picture of a grounded identity. In opposition, wrong places are unfamiliar, disorienting, threatening for our capacity to constitute a sense of self and the world. In overcoming the dualistic system of thinking our sense of place, it raises the possibility to explore the critical and creative potential of being out of place, as a temporal and spatial movement able to constitute new relations between the subject, the context and their temporary meaning. The archive will explore the complex issue of being out of place through the involvement of realities that act and move in different cultural territories. We will start from the Sixties, when this condition has been investigated by many artistic practices that has been reflecting on the relationship between the artistic process, the context in which they act and the space for their recognition. We would like to collect materials about projects and ideas that think about contemporary nomadism as a condition that overcrosses, not only physically, in territories not yet encoded, where, in order to reach a possible and temporary place of belonging it is necessary to move without a default destination.
